Browning makes a great use of it by allowing readers through predictable rhymes to go deeper into the subject of the poem. Use of caesura in the poem emphasizes this point. He is the only one who can admire the woman behind it. This point allows us to say that duchess probably was very unhappy living with such person. Duke reveals that woman was lovely by talking about how much other enjoyed being around her.

He made efforts to correct her but he failed. He wanted her to be under his sole and total control but the woman did not obey. One of the most noticeable things about the poem is the tone that Duke uses speaking to his audience. It is understandable that the man has great wealth and means. Duke is speaking with pride about his possessions. He wants to appear as a hurt husband whose wife left him no choice but to kill her. But talking about the painting, he reveals how much he appreciates things that he can control. Immediately Browning titles the story with a hint that suggests the story will describe ownership of one of many Duchess'. It also suggests through the name 'Duchess' that it is coming from a royal background rather than simply saying 'woman' or 'wife'. The story is about a Duke who decides to remove his wife from his life out of paranoia and jealousy, by murdering her. Browning is the writer and the listener, the Duke is the speaker and the story is told in a dramatic monologe. Another device I noticed is that Browning uses enjambment, this gives the poem rhythm and flow. The presentation of both these speakers in the form of a dramatic monologue enables Browning to aptly portray them, revealing as much regarding their personal life as possible.

Browning uses rhyme and meter to present certain aspects of these two very different speakers. This is initially unapparent due to the use of enjambment. Setting and Background The setting of "My Last Duchess," a highly acclaimed poem by Robert Browning, is the palace of the Duke of Ferrara on a day in October Ferrara is in northern Italy, between Bologna and Padua, on a branch of the Po River. The city was the seat of an important principality ruled by the House of Este from to The Este family constructed an imposing castle in Ferrara beginning in and, over the years, made Ferrara an important center of arts and learning. Two members of the family, Beatrice and Isabella, supported the work of such painters as Leonardo da Vinci and Raphael.

In Browning's poem, the Duke of Ferrara is modeled after Alfonso II, the fifth and last duke of the principality, who ruled Ferrara from to but in three marriages fathered no heir to succeed him. The deceased duchess in the poem was his first wife, Lucrezia de' Medici, a daughter of Cosimo de' Medici , Duke of Florence from to and Grand Duke of Tuscany from to Lucrezia died in at age In , Ferrara became part of the Papal States. My last duchess is a dramatic monologue where you explore the character of the Duke and his late wife. In the monologue you start to acknowledge the fact that perhaps the Duke himself has murdered his own wife because he was jealous. To start comparing, the two the narrators of each story are different. However, because he saw this as a threat to him, the narrator becomes enraged and decides to do away with her, permanently.

Now he is looking for someone new. She told him about how great he was and at the very end hints to the fact that he had cheated on her so they got divorced. Both ways, in my opinion, are very effective. Thesis Statement: With different motivations, but similar intentions the word choices and poetic rhetorical devices of the speakers reveal their attitudes toward women. The fact that commands were given for this to happen shows he considered his actions beforehand, and still decided to go ahead with the murder of his wife. The crime of his wife was to flirt with other men, a small crime for such a huge, permanent punishment.
